Piano Playing Cat Becomes Internet Sensation
Animal Teaches Herself Instrument
PHILADELPHIA -- A Philadelphia cat has become an Internet star after surprising her owners by teaching herself to play the piano.
Nora the cat has been playing the piano for nearly two years after watching her owner, Besty Alexander, give piano lessons to students.
"We were like, 'Oh my God!'" Alexander said. "She only purrs when she's at the piano."
Alexander taped Nora playing the piano and posted the video on YouTube.com so a niece could see the cat's piano skills.
The video has been played more than 650,000 times.
Alexander said she has received e-mails from all over the world. "We're having fun with this little moment of celebrity that she's having," she said.
However, Alexander said fans shouldn't expect a concert tour any time soon.

Police seek 'Onion Field' killer
Story Highlights• 'Onion Field' killer Jimmy Smith, 75, sought on alleged parole violation
• Smith is one of two men convicted in 1963 slaying of LAPD officer Ian Campbell
• Case gained fame in book by Joseph Wambaugh
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- One of the two men convicted of the "Onion Field" kidnap-murder of a police officer in 1963 has violated parole and is being sought by authorities.
Jimmy Lee Smith, 76, has been at large since December 22, said California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Jonathan Parsley.
Parsley could not specify what parole condition was violated. Smith previously went back to prison in June 2005 after admitting that he had violated parole by possessing heroin.
Smith and Gregory Powell were convicted of abducting two Los Angeles policemen from a Hollywood street on March 6, 1963. The officers were driven 75 miles to an onion field south of Bakersfield where Powell shot Officer Ian Campbell to death and fired at Officer Karl Hettinger as he fled.
The case was the subject of 1973 best-selling novel, "The Onion Field" by Joseph Wambaugh, which was turned into a movie in 1979.
Smith and Powell were sent to death row but their sentences were commuted to life in prison in 1972 when the California Supreme Court overturned the state's death penalty.
Smith was first paroled in 1982. He has since been arrested numerous times, mostly on drug-related charges.

Chris Cornell to Leave Audioslave
Dated: 02/16/2007 10:57:06 AM
LOS ANGELES - Chris Cornell is leaving rock group Audioslave, citing "irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences."
"I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors," Cornell said Thursday in a statement.
An after-hours call to Audioslave's music label was not immediately returned.
Cornell, 42, a former singer and guitarist with Seattle grunge band Soundgarden, said he'll release a solo album May 1 called "Carry On." He also co-owns a restaurant in Paris, where he splits his time. Audioslave was formed in 2001 and comprised of Cornell and three former members of Rage Against the Machine. The group recorded three albums and performed in Havana in 2005.
Meanwhile, Rage Against the Machine planned to reunite to perform at this year's Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival, which runs April 27 through 29. Tom Morello, the lead guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, has said the concert is a one-shot deal.

This is an outrage: Rapist Files Lawsuit
Rapist Files Lawsuit

A convicted rapist has filed suit against a victim's advocate who fought to keep him behind bars.
“He was the one that grabbed me off the sidewalk and put me in the back seat of the car and he was the first person that raped me in the car," said Wanda Jones.
Jones painfully recalls the 1983 gang rape by seven men that lasted for more than six hours. She says Stanley Wilson was the ring-leader of that nightmare.
Now, he's filing suit against Miriam Shehane, the director of victim's rights group, "VOCAL." Wilson claims Shehane gave misleading testimony to the parole board which is keeping him behind bars.
"I think it's the most ludicrous and frivolous lawsuit, and I think it's very sad that the courts have to be tied up with such frivolous lawsuits," said Jones.
Jones is angry about the suit, saying victim's advocates should have every right to go to parole hearings.
"It's because of people like Miriam that a lot of victims continue to fight and I think it's a very sad day when someone like Miriam is sued because of the good work that she's done, not just for me but for victim's all across the state," said Jones.
Stanley Wilson was sentenced to 40 years for the crime, and is up for parole again in 2009. Miriam Shehane, who's being sued for $2.5 million, is hoping the case is thrown out when they go to court on February 27th.

Man Fined For Killing Squirrel With Boiling Water
Man Fined For Killing Squirrel With Boiling Water
76-Year-Old John Grivas Found Guilty Of Animal Cruelty
(Northwest Herald) CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. A judge found a 76-year-old Crystal Lake man guilty Wednesday of animal cruelty for pouring boiling water on a squirrel that he trapped in his yard last year.
Judge Charles Weech sentenced John Grivas to serve one year of court supervision, pay a $250 fine and make a $250 donation to a state conservation group.
Grivas, who admitted the offense to conservation police, told police he did it because he grew frustrated with squirrels chewing on a window in his garage.
“He did it because he was mad,” said assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Campobasso. “He abused and cruelly treated that squirrel by pouring boiling water.”
Grivas’ neighbor, who testified during the one-day trial, reported the abuse to police after witnessing it from her kitchen window.

Trolley Square Shooting in Salt Lake City, UT
Monday night is one of my favorite nights on TV. Yes, I love "24"! However, about 15 minutes or so into it, came Breaking News. I knew it was not good, since I did not think FOX would break into "24" for no reason. This evening, a gunman entered Trolley Square (a small, downtown Salt Lake mall) and started shooting. Witnesses (and there were plenty--it was a mall) said the shooter was aiming at people, although I do not think there were specific targets. He reloaded (not sure how many times) and kept shooting. There are fatalities, at least one, but I keep hearing that there may be up to 5. The shooter, however, was reportedly killed by an off-duty police officer at the mall for dinner. As I watched the reports on TV, you could see people running from the mall. People were huddled in the backs of stores waiting for the police to finish searching the mall to make sure it was safe. I have a feeling that there are some people still hidden, just wanting to make sure everything was safe. Imagine going out to dinner with your family and then having your waiter shot. That happened in this situation. Several servers from Rodrizio's (a great Brazilian restaurant) spoke to one of the news channels with their terrifying story, The gunman aimed at one of them and shot, with the bullet grazing his head. He was not even aware that he was shot until he realized that he was bleeding. The gunman then shot at one of the others, but missed.
As calls for help started pouring in, police, fire and rescue started to arrive. There were lines of ambulances waiting outside to take the wounded to hospitals. On TV, all you could see were the lights of the ambulances twirling around.
"There have been multiple victims, and there are some fatalities. ... I can't confirm the number," Salt Lake City police Detective Robin Snyder said in brief remarks outside Trolley Square. "The suspect has been killed. He is no longer a threat," Snyder said.
and
An antique-store owner, Barrett Dodds, 29, said he saw a man in a trench coat exchanging gunfire with a police officer outside a card store. The gunman was backed into a children's clothing store. "I saw the cops go in the store. I saw the shooter go down," said Dodds, who watched from the second floor.
So far, that is the most concrete information released. Hopefully there will be more information soon. Right now, I am just hoping that (and I know this sounds horrible) no one I know was there at Trolley Square (which is actually a great mall). I feel so very bad for the people involved, and their friends and familes. It will be a tough time for all, especially those who witnessed this heinous situation.

Ronald McDonald Missing From Baytown Restaurant
POSTED: 9:09 am CST February 12, 2007
BAYTOWN, Texas -- A familiar fixture is missing from a Baytown McDonald's, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
Baytown police said a 6-foot tall Ronald McDonald statue was stolen from the McDonald's on Garth Road near the East Freeway on Feb. 3 or Feb. 4.
Officials said someone broke through a fence to get into the playground and then broke a lock to get to Ronald McDonald.
"He's old, but we want him back," manager Robert Ibarra said.
Ibarra said he does not know who did it, but he has a theory.
"Maybe the Hamburglar," Ibarra said. "They don't get along too well."
Ronald McDonald is about 6 feet tall with a white face and red noise, mouth and hair. He was last seen in a red, white and yellow outfit with big red shoes. Officials said it is unlikely that his appearance has changed.
Police said Ronald McDonald's estimated value is $2,000.
Officials said they do not have any leads in the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Baytown Police Department at 281-422-8371.

Convicted molester sentenced to 800 years for sexually abusing 3 boys
(AP) The former roommate of one of the nation's most prolific child molesters was sentenced Friday to at least 800 years in prison for sexually abusing three boys.
Fred Everts, 36, was convicted last year of molesting the youngsters, ages 3, 9 and 11. He was sentenced to 800 years to life.
Police discovered the crimes two years ago while investigating Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller, who authorities say may have molested hundreds of youngsters over decades and kept detailed logs on the children.
Schwartzmiller, 65, was sentenced in January to 152 years in prison for abusing two 12-year-old boys. He and Everts had met in prison on earlier molestation charges and eventually moved in together in San Jose.
Steve Fein, who prosecuted both men, said Everts admitted molesting about 40 children, including his 3-month-old biological son. He asked for the maximum sentence of 1,175 years to life.
Everts' sentence was compounded under California's three-strikes law because of two felony convictions in Oregon in 1993 for sodomy and sexual abuse on his young stepson.
In asking for leniency, defense lawyer Steven Woodson asked the judge to disregard the previous two felonies and consider his client's admission to the crimes and cooperation with investigators.

Teens sentenced for cooking puppy in oven
These two young men just make me sick. I cannot imagine what it would take to put a live animal into an oven, hear it scratching to get out and I am sure it yelped and barked through the whole experience. It was only a 3 month onld puppy. I can only imagine what evil must exist within these two boys to have done this. Something inside me says that they were laughing the whole time too, while this poor animal was being tortured and killed. How would they feel if it happened to them? And I bet they wanted the Court to show them mercy. I am glad that the Judge showed them as much mercy as they showed this puppy.

Atlanta teens killed dog, then threatened children if they told about it
The Associated Press
Updated: 6:19 p.m. MT Feb 9, 2007
ATLANTA - Two teenage brothers each were sentenced to 10 years in prison for torturing a puppy by cooking it in an oven.
Joshua Moulder, 17, and Justin, 19, pleaded guilty in January to charges including burglary, criminal damage to property, terroristic threats and cruelty to children.
The brothers brought neighborhood children to see the dead puppy, then threatened to kill them if they reported it, prosecutors said.
Police said they found the dead mixed-breed puppy inside an oven at an apartment community center Aug. 21. Scratch marks were found inside the oven, indicating the puppy had been alive when it was placed inside, prosecutors said.
A necropsy on the 3-month-old dog found its paws and snout had been duct taped and it had been doused with paint before being placed in the oven, prosecutors said.
Authorities also found damaged computers, broken glass and splattered paint on the walls of the newly refurbished community center.
The brothers’ first trial ended in a mistrial in December. Their attorney, Timothy Owens, said he had hoped his clients’ sentencing would have focused more on rehabilitation than incarceration.

Anna NIcole Smith, a sad ending
By now almost everyone in the world has heard that Anna Nicole Smith has died. Sudden and shocking really, however, not really. She has seemed (at least to me) to be quite depressed since her son died, like she had no will to live. Even through all of that, she was larger than life. Sometimes things seemed so crazy in her life. But she was a vibrant, beautiful woman. Unfortunately, most of her life was in the limelight for all to see. You hear all these jokes about her marrying an "older" wealthy man, her weight, etc. But how many look at the good things in her life? She loved being a mother. It brought her great joy. And she did indeed lose a great deal of weight, making her an inspiration to many. Her life may not have been ideal for all, but who are we to judge her? After all, her children loved her, and from all appearances, she had a happy marriage with Marshall, albeit very short.
No matter your opinion of her, she was still a human being, a woman, a person. I hope she has found peace now.

Heavenly News For Super Bowl Bears
Vince Gerasole
Reporting
(CBS) CHICAGO You’ve heard the old saying, “better lucky than good,” but what about some divine intervention? It can’t hurt.
CBS 2’s Vince Gerasole found a nun with an unusual habit.
When it comes to football, Sister Jean Kenny’s prognostications are divine, and the latest sounds heavenly.
“I predict the Bears will win Super Bowl XLI by a score of 30 to 27. Go Bears!” the sister said.
Now before you say her needle-point “Bear chair,” her “Bearly” decorated tree and the gift of Bears socks from Sister Barbara are a bunch of “nunsense,” keep in mind Sister Jean’s record with predictions: 17 right and four wrong in the last 21 years.
Do not credit these visions to her heavenly connections.
“God’s part of everything, but I’d have to say this one’s a little more with ‘ProFootball Weekly,’” Sister Jean said.
That’s right, the paper is her Bible, so to speak. She analyses its statistics like chapter and verse.
For the Bears, the numbers just add up.
“I’m just so impressed with the take-aways they have and when the strip the football, not only do they strip it, they get the ball back,” she said.
But don’t football an mass coincide on Sundays?
“The Bears are a priority on Sundays,” she said. “Because I go to church Saturday night.”
“I spend too much time doing this, I tell you, but when the Bears are in it, it’s worth it,” she added.

“Every day in the greater Chicago area, we counsel individuals who are impacted by fires and other emergencies,” chief response officer LaForice Nealy said in the release. “We are very experienced in helping people through disasters and we will be ready to do the same for our Indianapolis colleagues on Monday.”
The Red Cross will also host a Super Bowl spirit day and chili cook off on Friday, where staff and volunteers are encouraged to wear their favorite NFL gear -- preferably orange and blue, the release said.

LONDON - “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the last of seven installments of the boy wizard’s adventures, will be published July 21, author J.K. Rowling said Thursday.
Rowling announced the publication date on her Web site.
Bloomsbury, her British publisher, said it would publish a children’s hardback edition, an adult hardback, a special gift edition and an audio book on the same day.
Scholastic Children’s Books, the U.S. publisher, said it would offer a hardback edition at a suggested retail price of $34.99, a deluxe edition at $65.00 and a reinforced library edition at $39.99.
Bloomsbury noted that this year is the 10th anniversary of the publication of the first “Harry Potter” book in the phenomenally successful series.
The “Potter” books have sold 325 million copies worldwide and been translated into 64 languages, Bloomsbury said.
The last book, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” sold 2,009,574 copies in Britain on the first day of its release, Bloomsbury said.
The Potter franchise is so important to the company’s earnings that it announced the publication to the London Stock Exchange.
Bloomsbury shares were up 2.2 percent to $4.40 after the announcement.
